Jointly Wiki
Practical help for setting up a local-first household budget, keeping bills clear and protecting your data.
Setup
- Open Jointly and complete the first-run walkthrough.
- Add the people who contribute to the household budget.
- Add regular income sources and monthly bills.
- Create savings goals or spaces for planned spending.
No email address, account or cloud login is required.
Bills
Use bills for recurring household and personal costs such as rent, council tax, energy, subscriptions and insurance.
- Set the amount, owner, category and due date.
- Mark bills as paid when they are handled.
- Use reminders if you want a local notification before a bill is due.
Income
Add each income source so Jointly can show what comes in before comparing it with bills, spaces and savings.
- Use clear names such as Salary, Freelance or Child Benefit.
- Keep amounts current when pay changes.
- Separate income by person when that helps shared planning.
Savings
Savings goals track progress towards planned targets such as holidays, emergency funds, deposits and large purchases.
- Create a goal with a target amount.
- Log deposits as money is saved.
- Use the progress view to see how close the goal is.
- Open the Savings Journey to follow milestones, XP, levels and reached path achievements.
Spaces
Spaces are simple pots for planned spending. Use them for groceries, transport, car costs, nights out or any category that needs a limit.
- Create a space for each spending area.
- Add or remove money as plans change.
- Review spaces during the month to keep shared money tidy.
CSV Import
CSV import lets you review bank statement files without connecting Jointly to your bank.
- Export a CSV statement from your bank.
- Open the CSV import flow in Jointly.
- Map the date, description and amount columns.
- Review the preview before saving imported data.
Household Sync
Household sync pairs two devices with a QR code and syncs directly over local Wi-Fi. There is no cloud account in the middle.
- Keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Use the pairing flow on one device and scan from the other.
- If sync fails, check Wi-Fi permissions and try pairing again.
Backups And Restore
Backups are created only when you choose to export one. They are encrypted with your passphrase before leaving the app.
- Store the backup file somewhere you control.
- Keep the passphrase safe. It cannot be recovered if lost.
- Restore from Settings on the new or reset device.
Privacy And Data
Jointly is local-first. By default, budget data stays on your device and is not uploaded to NorthByte Labs servers.
- Use app lock to protect Jointly with device authentication.
- Delete imported bank data from Settings when it is no longer needed.
- Uninstalling the app removes local app data from the device.
Troubleshooting
A CSV will not import
Check that the file has date, description and amount columns, then remap the columns in the import preview.
A reminder did not appear
Confirm notifications are enabled for Jointly in your device settings.
A backup will not restore
Use the original encrypted backup file and exact passphrase, including capital letters and spaces.
Sync cannot find another phone
Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network and keep the sync screens open while pairing.
